What does an Industrial Engineer do?

Industrial engineers plan, organise, supervise and manage the operations of industries to ensure the economical, safe and effective use of materials, energy and people. The job duties of an industrial engineer include plan and design systems that increase productivity by improving the integration of people, materials, equipment and finance; analyse workforce utilisation, facility layout, operational data and production schedules and costs to determine optimum worker and equipment efficiencies; or establish work measurement programs and analyse work samples to develop standards for labour utilisation.

Industrial Engineer may specialise in supply chain and logistics, data analysis, procurement or quality.

How to become an Industrial Engineer?

To become an industrial engineer you usually have to complete a degree in engineering with a major in manufacturing or mechanical engineering. Alternatively, you can complete a relevant degree, followed by a postgraduate qualification in industrial engineering. Experience is usually required for registration or licensing.
